Buffalo Lawn Care
Easy Soft Leaf Buffalo Lawn Weed and Pest Control
By Todd Layt
There are a lot of pest control products and herbicides that aren’t available for home owners to purchase. This can be for registration reasons or the fact that the products are only available in larger sizes and would be too expensive to use for the average soft leaf buffalo lawn.
Lawn care professionals can easily get these chemicals though, so sometimes it’s best to have a professional weed and pest control company do the job for you.
For example with onion weed, if you remove the bulbs it won’t really work. Painting the leaf with Glyphosate over a few applications is one option but is hard to do and won’t always work.
A professional spray that works on onion weed and won’t hurt most lawn types is Destiny. It ususally costs more than $700 and covers many hectares so is too expensive for a single home. The best way for the average home owner to get rid of Onion weed is to call in a professional to spray it with Destiny.
The removal of couch or Kikuyu from gardens is a simple task for a professional landscaper. All they do is spray the garden with Fusilade, killing the unwanted grass and leaving your non-grass plants like Mondo grass, Liriope, Lomandra and Dianella unharmed.
At a cost of $198, Fusilade Forte won’t break the bank, but as it covers a large area it might be better and more cost effective to call in a professional to do this plus, while they are there you can get them to take care of other lawn problems.
To take out sedges in your lawn you can use Halosulfuron which is a useful chemical for eliminating Nutgrass and Mullumbimby.
One that you can use your self is called Sedgehammer and it is available to the public for around $72, however, having a professional take care of multiple problems in your yard can be more cost effective.
To get you through the summer lawn grub season you can use Acelepryn which is a safe non-scheduled lawn grub control for lawn turf. With a mid-Spring application it will last for up to 6 months and controls African Black Beetle, Argentine Stem Weevil, Argentinian Scarab, Billbugs, Cutworm, Armyworm and Webworm.
For home owners it’s quite an expensive chemical to buy. The 750ml bottle it comes in covers a hectare. If you ever have lawn care professional in doing work, it‘d be worthwhile asking them to apply this at the same time.
If you go away in summer on holidays think about having a lawn care professional apply Acelepryn and Primo Maxx at the same time. Primo Maxx Turf Growth Regulator greatly reduces turf growth for 6 weeks. At only $132, it is a viable option to buy yourself. Apply this before you leave on holidays and you will not come back to a jungle.
Lawn care professionals should also have a good understanding of how to take care of other weeds such as broadleaf and many other grass weeds. They can also apply fertiliser to your lawn but if you want to do this yourself it is recommended to use a good slow release lawn fertiliser.
Professional lawn spraying contractors also have access to a lot of great lawn grass pre-emergents, which prevent weed seeds from germinating. You can buy Oxa Pro If you want to do this yourself which is a combination slow release fertiliser and a pre-emergent.
It’s worth getting these chemicals for yourself if you live on acreage but otherwise, many chemicals like Acelepryn and Destiny are just too expensive because of the larger commercial sizes that they come in, so it is probably best to use a contractor. It can become difficult at times but if you get on well with your neighbours you could alternatively pool your resources.
Using a professional can mean no more Nutgrass, or Onion weed, it can solve lawn grub problems, and can lead to a healthy weed free well fertilised soft leaf buffalo lawn.
